ORCID, which stands for Open Researcher and Contributor IDentifier, is an international system that allows researchers to create a unique, permanent digital identifier (ORCID ID) to uniquely identify them. The ORCID profile has thus become an essential part of a researcher’s digital identity and accompanies them throughout their career.

In 2026, UM will launch a campaign to encourage the creation and maintenance of ORCID IDs by offering to verify the accounts of UM faculty members.
