Open Science Barometer

TheFrench Open Science Barometer (BSO)is one of the initiatives underthe National Plan for Open Science. Launched in 2019, it tracks the national rate of open-access research publications: publications in which at least one of the authors is affiliated with an institution in France. Any research institution can now request that the Ministry provide these indicators to create its own Barometer.
In 2022, UM launched a local version of the French Open Science Barometer (BSO). It covers publications from 2017 to 2025 in which at least one of the authors is affiliated with our university.
The open access rate for publications released in 2022 rose from 73% to 81% in 2025.

Disclaimer : The data used for the Montpellier Barometer comes from various sources, such as Web of Science, SciVal, and HAL. Despite cross-referencing this data, the list of publications included is not exhaustive. In fact, only publications with a DOI can be included at this time. Since publications in the Humanities and Social Sciences are generally underrepresented in databases, they may also be underrepresented in the Barometer. The inclusion of publications listed in HAL without a DOI is planned for the near future.
