UNESCO's major consultation on open access Diamond

Since September 20, a consultation on open access Diamant has been underway, under the auspices of UNESCO. All stakeholders in research—researchers, academics, and information professionals in particular—are invited to participate in this international survey.

This participatory approach to gathering feedback, ideas, and proposals should enable UNESCO to generate global momentum for engagement and collaboration, and to implement actions and mechanisms that promote open access to Diamant.

Recent steps in UNESCO's commitment to open access Diamond

In October 2023, the first global summit on open access Diamant took place in Toluca, Mexico.

On July 10, 2024, UNESCO launched the Global Diamond Open Access Alliance, a collaborative framework designed to promote this mode of access to scientific publications.

The second global summit on open access Diamond, to be held from December 8 to 14, 2024, in Cape Town, South Africa, under the title "Centering social justice in scientific communication to advance research as a public good," will be an opportunity to present the results of the ongoing consultation and strengthen the collective international commitment to the Diamond route.

By the way, what is the Diamond Way?

The two best-known forms of Open Access are the green route (open archives) and the gold route (open access journals).

The Diamond route can be considered the most virtuous publishing model, in that it allows the scientific community to publish in open access without financial costs for either authors or readers, thanks to upstream institutional funding. In addition, copyright is retained through the use of Creative Commons licenses.
